Firekeeper's Daughter: A Good Mystery

👋Hi everyone! I recently read a mystery novel called Firekeeper's Daughter, written by Angeline Boulley, which was an interesting book, with a good mystery and surprising plot turns.

Firekeeper's Daughter is told from the perspective of 18-year-old Daunis Fontanie, who "has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation". Her Ojibwe father is deceased, and her white mother is caring for her grandmother a lot, who has just had a stroke. Then, she meets a new guy on her brother's hockey team, Jamie, and her brother asks her to show him around town. For a while, she is feeling more comfortable with this "new normal".

Spoiler alert!

Then, suddenly, Daunis witnesses her best friend Lily gets killed by her ex, who is a drug addict. She then realizes that Jamie is actually an undercover FBI agent, not a high school senior. She is forced into an investigation to find the drug Lily's ex created. She has to pose as Jamie's girlfriend, to stay undercover. The deeper into the investigation she goes, the more complicated it seems to get, and more and more people are found dead.

I liked the mystery aspect of this book (I like mysteries), but I didn't really like any of the romance. It seemed pretty forced and kind of confusing. Also, the action is kind of slow to start (it takes like 100 pages for her to actually start the investigation). However, the mystery itself is good and it was an exciting page-tuner.

I would recommend this book if you like mysteries. I'm sorry if the summary was kind of hard to understand. 😭

See you next time!

  1. You have a nice, brief review that goes over the book's idea pretty well! It sounds interesting, and like quite the story for the detectives to figure out. Though, I have one concern - I think this blog would be easier to understand if there was a better contrast background to the text. I can barely read the dark blue against the dark background. But other than that, great book, great review!

  2. This book seems pretty interesting. I think that the summary was good (better than I can do) and you didn't give too much away without a spoiler warning. I might check out this book now (I suffer with knowing what books are good so any recommendation helps). Thank you! :)
