Looking for Alaska

This blog cycle, I read a book called Looking for Alaska by John Green. I ended up really liking it, so I decided to write my blog post about it (also I didn't really read much else). It is a realistic fiction book about a boy named Miles (nicknamed Pudge) who decides to go to the Culver Creek boarding school, inspired by the last words (he is interested in people's last words) of François Rabelais about "a great perhaps". At the boarding school, he befriends his roommate, Chip (nicknamed "The Colonel"), who introduces him to a girl named Alaska. Miles and Alaska become friends and have multiple conversations about "the labyrinth of suffering" (mentioned in Simón Bolívar's last words).

Even though this book has been banned and challenged many times (there is some sexual content, also drug use and suicide although that is kind of not specified it is hard to explain without spoiling part of the book), I would recommend this book. One of the things that I like about it is the character development, we can definitely see how much Miles has changed from the start to the end of this book, and there aren’t really one-dimensional characters (if there are then I forgot about them because they're not at all relevant 💀).

Thank you for reading my blog!

  1. Hi Juni! The banned and challenged books part is giving me flashbacks to last year jajaja. This book sounds really interesting, especially the part about how Miles likes hearing/knowing about people's last words... Nice blogpost!

  2. Hey Juni, I enjoyed this blogpost, it was detailed and had a good overall summary, but didn't spoil much- however, you did hook me with there being something about last words. However, I have one question; what do you mean by one-dimensional characters? Thanks, and awesome review!

    1. Like characters who have 1 personality trait and it's something generic like "kind" or "smart". They're just not that fun to read about.

  3. Great blog post, Juni! I enjoyed your little "hook" for the novel. I have this one sitting on my shelf right now and am just waiting for a free day to settle in and read it in one sitting haha... This post made me excited to finally read it!
